Our first technical excursion leads us to Yangshan deep water port. It provides service for container ships in Hangzhou Bay, south of Shanghai. Thanks to this port the Port of Shanghai is able to grow despite shallow waters near the shore. It is capable of giving service to berths with depths of up to 15 metres and can handle today's largest container ships. The islands of Greater and Lesser Yangshan and part of the Zhoushan archipelago including fill from land reclamation are the foundations of the port. The connection to the mainland is given via the 32.5 km Donghai Bridge which opened on 1 December 2005 as the world's longest sea bridge. It took two and half years to construct this six-lane highway bridge. In mid-2011, port officials said the port was on track to move 12.3 million TEUs during the year.
